Good places to volunteer internationally?

Question by Josh A: Good places to volunteer internationally?
I want to volunteer somewhere internationally this summer to get some experience, and also, to travel. Any suggestions on where I should go? I want this to be as interesting as possible, and need to have things to do while not working.

Answer by jcravens42
Be prepared to pay a fee for such volunteering — unless you can work in a language other than English (speaking, reading and writing) and have skills and experience that can lead to local people generating income, better feeding their families, improving children’s health, etc., or that can lead to the transformation of key institutions, such as government, universities/schools or NGOs. Organizations that don’t charge for volunteering are looking for highly skilled, very experienced people who can commit to a two-year assignment, who have experience working with under-served communities, or who have a lot of experience in very diverse or religiously-conservative communities. The goal is to give local people jobs, not to give Westerners a feel-good vacation — hence why short-term placement agencies charge volunteers, or require these volunteers to pay their own way (transportation, housing, accommodation, security, translators, etc.).

There is a listing of the more-than-30 member organizations of the International Volunteers Program Association (IVPA) that is a good place to find reputable volunteer-for-a-fee programs.

http://www.volunteerinternational.org/

The cheapest overseas volunteer-sending organization in the USA that will send unskilled volunteers for short-term assignments (six months or less) that I’ve found is SCI – Service Civil International (http://www.sci-ivs.org/). I know *nothing* about them other than what’s on their web site, so please don’t consider the listing of this organization in my answer as an endorsement.

Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations, and how you can gain that experience locally. It also lists the various organizations that don’t charge for volunteer placement (but require a great deal of experience — the average age of a UN Volunteer is 38).

I am looking for the site where you can find people to stay with while traveling, or you can offer your place.?

Question by Ulukai: I am looking for the site where you can find people to stay with while traveling, or you can offer your place.?
I am looking for a website that I once came across, that you can use when you need a place to stay while traveling. People post the city they are in, what they have available (extra bed, couch, floor, a hot tub, etc). You can of course also volunteer your place. Does anyone know what website I am talking about, so I can find it?
Thanks conley39, that is exactly what I was looking for!

Patan Community Based Rehabilitation Organization (Patan CBR) is a non-profit organization using CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation) for the betterment of disabled children within the Lalitpur, Kathmandu and Nuwakot districts of Nepal.

Patan CBR provides services for children with disabilities including:

Day-care centre Home visits Play groups Assistance to educational institutions Training and skill development

CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation) has been described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a strategy within community development for the rehabilitation, equalization of opportunities, and social integration of all people with disabilities. CBR is implemented through the combined efforts of disabled people themselves, their families and communities, and the appropriate health, education, vocational and social services.

CBR was introduced by WHO some 20 years ago and has been adopted as the national strategy in over 80 principally low-income countries.

Although CBR is an international strategy, it is recognized that, because all communities differ in socio-economic conditions, terrain, cultures and political systems, there cannot be a single model of CBR for the world. In countries like Nepal where government resources are scarce, services for disabled children are extremely limited. CBR therefore shifts the emphasis from institutions or hospitals only offering medical rehabilitation, to the community in order to work with people with disabilities in achieving equal opportunities, equal rights and dignity. In much of Nepal, CBR is the only viable approach to reach thousands of otherwise-unreachable disabled persons.

This Organization works for all kind of physical and mental Disabilities. They are performing Day Care, Home Visit, Play groups, assistance to educational institution and training and skill development to those physically and mentally disabled person. To assist the staff by working with the disabled people in the rehabilitation center this organisation needs volunteers.

Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks:-

Develop recreational activities for the patients, teach them skills, interact with them, work in the day Care, help with school preparation classes, conduct home visits, vocational training, and various administrative tasks

Volunteers with the following specific skills are preferred for this placement:

Doctor
Nurse

Standard First-Aid
Medical Administration
Public Health
Physiotherapy
Child & Youth Worker
Early Childhood Education
Recreational Programming
Social Worker (BSW)
