Has anyone ever gone on a “volunteer vacation” with Global Volunteers before? (http://www.globalvolunteers.org)

I’m thinking of traveling to Romania next summer for 3 weeks to volunteer with abandoned or disabled infants and toddlers. How reliable is the company and how was your experience if you’ve done it before?

hi, i was just in romania im now in hungary romania is not that bad. and the term volunteer vacation is false, it is a good organization but choose another part of the world that’s a little worse of then romania….. its full of a bunch of lazy slackers. the experience is a heart breaker, you will feel so happy for what you do have and the fact that children in africa dieing by the hundreds……. you need to be ready for the physiological factor, im a veteran of bosnia, kosovo, Afghanistan and iraq, and been in 28 engagements iv seen some nasty stuff and not much bothers me, but the kids get me every time…. you need to be ready to give everything you’ve got. please feel free to contact me for more questions

Dristi Nepal serves the female drug user population in Nepal through counselling, awareness programs, rehabilitation, and re-integration. Dristi Nepal operates a treatment center in Kathmandu as well as outreach programs and awareness campaigns. It assists : Female sex workers, women living with HIV/AIDS, female drug users. Placement Work Details Dristi Nepal is currently the only organization of it’s kind that serves women.

Volunteers can help by:

Educating staff. Educating clients. Implementing outreach programs. Assisting with administrative work. Providing counselling to both recovering addicts and their families. Assisting with awareness programs, fundraising. Facilitating re-integration of female ex-drug users into society. Rehabilitation. HIV/AIDS Awareness training. Other tasks that you may be requested to preform outside of your core duties: Translation of material into English. Website creation. Sharing computer knowledge with staff and clients. Teaching English.

Volunteer should have the following background:

Experience working with high-risk populations, addicts. A background in psychology, social work, addiction counselling, crisis counselling, outreach work.

I want to volunteer somewhere internationally this summer to get some experience, and also, to travel. Any suggestions on where I should go? I want this to be as interesting as possible, and need to have things to do while not working.

Be prepared to pay a fee for such volunteering — unless you can work in a language other than English (speaking, reading and writing) and have skills and experience that can lead to local people generating income, better feeding their families, improving children’s health, etc., or that can lead to the transformation of key institutions, such as government, universities/schools or NGOs. Organizations that don’t charge for volunteering are looking for highly skilled, very experienced people who can commit to a two-year assignment, who have experience working with under-served communities, or who have a lot of experience in very diverse or religiously-conservative communities. The goal is to give local people jobs, not to give Westerners a feel-good vacation — hence why short-term placement agencies charge volunteers, or require these volunteers to pay their own way (transportation, housing, accommodation, security, translators, etc.).

There is a listing of the more-than-30 member organizations of the International Volunteers Program Association (IVPA) that is a good place to find reputable volunteer-for-a-fee programs.

The cheapest overseas volunteer-sending organization in the USA that will send unskilled volunteers for short-term assignments (six months or less) that I’ve found is SCI – Service Civil International (http://www.sci-ivs.org/). I know *nothing* about them other than what’s on their web site, so please don’t consider the listing of this organization in my answer as an endorsement.

Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations, and how you can gain that experience locally. It also lists the various organizations that don’t charge for volunteer placement (but require a great deal of experience — the average age of a UN Volunteer is 38).

Nepal Natural and Human Resources Development Association (NAHUDA) is a national, non-profit, non governmental organization” established in 1992 with a mission to develop human resources to provide services in reproductive health, services to women. Its main objective is to provide no-frills services in the filed of women’s health issues. They are concentrating on preventing cervical and breast cancer by means of cervical smear screening and propagating techniques to educate and promote self-breast screening. They provide health services to the female population in general, especially women who are members of low socio-economic rural communities. NAHUDA needs help from nurses or doctors to help with their screening and camps. They also require help with administration and data collection/research.

Volunteers will take part in a number of tasks including:

1. Reviewing of present reporting (clinical + field activities) system to make more effective. 2. Participating in NAHUDA’s office management and clinical activities 3. Aiding in locating more resources for NAHUDA 4. Participating in extension work (field orientation) and field camp 5. Helping NAHUDA with women’s health research to help promote prevention and screening for women in Nepal. 6. Collecting resources and running a village field camp
